Serena Williams & Anna Wintour Discuss S By Serena’s Size Inclusive Clothing Line During New York Fashion Week

One of the most epic moments of New York Fashion Week was sitting in the same room as Serena Williams, Anna Wintour, and Andre Leon Talley. For the second year legendary tennis player Serena Williams showed her “S By Serena” fashion line. However, she did her show a little different. Instead of having models strut down the runway she opted for a one on one sit down with Vogue editor Anna Wintour to discuss the Serena Williams clothing line.

Serena Williams & Anna Wintour One on One

Serena’s intimate moment with the who’s who in the fashion industry was set up as an opportunity to get to know why she started her line. Sitting and listening to the conversation between Serena and Anna, I learned some new things about the tennis star.

When Anna Wintour said to Serena “You’re one of the worlds greatest and most successful athletes, what on earth makes you want to take on fashion?” The room erupted with laughter. We were all wondering the same thing.

Serena said, “I love fashion. I actually went to school for fashion during winning Wimbeldon’s. It was fun and it was a lot of work. I always had a passion for it. Our mom use to make outfits for us and I use to watch her put those old Vogue patterns on the floor and cut out the outfits. It was really cool. It was just in my blood and in my life.”

Serena Williams Clothing Line For Spring 2020

After the conversation with Anna, Serena introduced her newest collection. Models began walking around the room in a mix of spring and fall looks. Some of my favorite pieces from Serena Williams clothing line were a two toned green ruched dress. In addition, I loved a gold metallic pant suit and a animal print shirtdress with a thigh high side split.

What’s refreshing about Serena Williams clothing line is that its wearable pieces for a variety of body types. She did include a few curvy models in her showing. Last year she had a few plus size models on the runway, so it was nice to see that she’s continuing with being size inclusive. For those of you that don’t know, Serena’s clothing line does include plus sizes up to a 3X.

Another dress I loved was this metallic one shoulder mock neck dress. It’s perfect for a red carpet event. In addition to the clothing line, Serena is also doing jewelry. Which we will be able to shop soon.

Serena Williams Debuts Her Size Inclusive Clothing Line & Features Plus Size Models At New York Fashion Week

As NYFW wraps up, can I just tell all of you how much I loved the S by Serena runway collection. A few weeks ago I received an invite to the S by Serena NYFW show. Since I love everything Serena Williams does, I replied yes with the quickness. I didn’t know what to expect from the runway show but what I saw had me screaming yasssssss from my front row seat (yes, your girl was sitting front row) repeatedly.

Lately there has been a surge of new and seasoned fashion designers screaming size inclusive and claiming to be body positive, but they barely incorporate plus size women or curvy women in their marketing images or fashion shows. However, there are a few fashion designers and retail brands that actually make sure there is a diverse group of models included in their campaigns and runway shows. S by Serena has joined the latter.

Fashion week is slowly becoming a place where plus size women can feel like they belong. We still have some hurdles to overcome but within the past few years there has been significant changes. The most notable change is seeing more plus size models on the runway. It use to be just one plus size model but now designers are incorporating more. S by Serena runway collection featured about 4 curvy plus size models.

S by Serena Williams Collection

When the lights dimmed and the music started blasting at Serena’s fashion show, excitement filled my body. I just knew that I was going to see some curves on the runway. S by Serena featured curvy models in some of the same sexy and sassy pieces as the traditional sized models. I spied Hayley Hasselhoff on the runway sporting an uber chic neon yellow maxi coat. I squealed and then screamed yassss again. Don’t worry. I have an extensive vocabulary but yasssss just seemed more appropriate.

S by Serena served up some amazing fall fashion looks. From a cowl neck leopard print dress to a burnout velvet jumpsuit. This collection is truly for the chic, sexy, and sophisticated. It’s clothes that the everyday woman wants to wear. According to the brand is for:

Women worldwide. Business women, entrepreneurs, outsiders and underdogs. Women with crazy dreams, women who break traditions and boundaries. And unflinching women of all colors and sizes.”

The collection featured on trend styles that were office appropriate. I spied a belted blazer dress and a plaid overcoat that would take you from desk to dinner.

If you didn’t know, the S by Serena collection ranges in size from XS-3X. The only thing I wish is that all of the pieces from the collection came in plus sizes.

In A Powerful Nike Ad, Serena Williams Says There’s No Wrong Way To Be A Woman

Hey curvy girls all over the world,

We live in a world that constantly tells women what they should look like, how they should dress, and how they should act. As women, we can get so caught up trying to live up to society’s idea of who we should be. I was always taught to be myself. Be true to who I am. Even if people don’t think who I am or what I look like fits in to their box. One of the most iconic female athletes in this world is Serena Williams. She’s iconic for her skills on the tennis court but for me as a black woman, she’s iconic for not allowing herself to be put in a box.

During the Oscars, Nike released a new ad featuring Serena Williams. Serena shares all the negative things people have said about her as a woman. In the ad there are shots of Serena playing tennis and you hear her say,

“I’ve never been the right kind of woman. Oversized and overconfident. Too mean if I don’t smile. Too black for my tennis whites. Too motivated for motherhood. But I am proving, time and time again, there’s no wrong way to be a woman.”

That’s right Serena, there is no wrong way to be a woman. No, you’re not too oversized and overconfident. You’re a goddess. No, you’re not to black, you have swag when you’re on that tennis court. Continue to show and prove that you’re just a phenomenal woman.
