Hey curvy girls all over the world,
This morning I woke up to some very disturbing news. I was watching WPIX on channel 11 and they reported on a story about one Lilly Pulitzer employee who posted fat shaming cartoons with hateful captions in her work space. Some of the cartoons had captions like
“Just another day of fat, white, and hideous…you should probably just kill yourself,”
Another caption read: “Put it down, Carb Face.”
Of course, once these photos were posted, Twitter went ham and started calling out the company. As we all know, no company is safe when social media reacts, so the company decided to release a statement saying,
“While we are an employer that does encourage people to decorate their own space, we are a female-dominated company and these images do not reflect our values. We apologize for any harm this may have caused.”
Can I just say that is a half a** apology. My first question is, why would this employee think it’s okay or feel comfortable enough to post these photos at work? My second question is, why wouldn’t a supervisor ask her to take it down? Unfortunately, just because companies make clothes in plus size doesn’t mean that they stand for plus size women. Some companies, just want to cash in on the billion dollar business.
Also, one employee’s thoughts and opinions doesn’t always reflect that of the company but a company who has employees that publicly display tasteless, inconsiderate, and negative behavior that is damaging to that brand, needs to check those employees and let them know that type of behavior is unacceptable.
However, I can’t help but to think if this employee had the pictures up for personal reasons. Maybe these photos were used as motivation for her to lose weight.

What are your thoughts on this situation?

I’m a plus size gal myself and I’m not offended by the images that surfaced. I Feel that people do inappropriate things in every workplace. This is a reflection of that persons personal space, not the company as a whole. I can see if this was posted in the break room, but it wasn’t.

@sahily, I definitely get your point. I was also thinking maybe she had this on her wall for herself personally

Very disappointing.
Entirely half $&@ apology.

@tia I also agree that the apology wasn’t the best either.
