Hey curvy girls all over the world,
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am all about female empowerment. I know it sounds a little cliche but as women, we all need to support each other. As Beyonce said in her HBO documentary, Life Is But A Dream, “It’s difficult being a woman. It’s so much pressure, and we need that support sometimes and we need that escape sometimes.” “We’re all going through our problems, but we all have the same insecurities and we all have the same abilities and we all need each other.” It’s true. As females we need each other. Thanks to a collaboration with Zenni Optical, I sat down on a bright sunny Sunday morning and reflected on the women who have impacted my life.

When I look back over my life and think about how I got to where I am today, I think about two women. My mom and my sister. I recognize these two women as leaders because they helped shape and mold me into the woman I am today. My mother is like my personal counselor and spiritual guide.Whenever I begin to doubt myself or the direction my life is going in, my mom is always there with words of wisdom. Whenever I have ideas she’s the first to tell me to step out on faith and just do it. I always wondered where she got her positive and can do attitude from and I realized its all from her life experiences. Everything she has gone through, the good, the bad, and the ugly, she shares her experiences with me so I don’t make the same mistakes.
I remember when I came up with the idea of doing the Stylish Curves Pop Up Shop, I was so scared. I didn’t want to fail. I wanted to be successful. I remember when I had only sold one ticket the first week, I was in a panic and was ready to shut the whole thing down. It was my mother’s words of encouragement that helped me get through. She told me that I didn’t have this idea for no reason. She told me that God was with me and as long as I put in the work, the event was going to be successful. And it was. My mom is all about faith and trusting in God. She instilled that in me, and that’s why to this day, I make sure I pray and have a talk with God.
My sissy poo taught me how to be strong. Having an older sister has always been a blessing. My sister has a natural motherly protective spirit. As a mother of 3 boys, she does an amazing job. I always wondered how she does it. With three boys, my sister was a college student, worked full time, and still was able to find time to volunteer at a youth center for inner city kids. Her strength is something that I admire. After having my son, I was completely clueless as to what I needed to do. My mom lived in Maryland, so she wasn’t able to be here, but my sister lived in Brooklyn a few miles from me, and she became my guide and backbone when it came to being a first time mom. When I came home with my son, my sister came to my house and set up the nursery. She called me daily to make sure I was okay.

The woman who inspires me is my mother. She raised 8 children and even though she never finished high school she still instilled in us that education was important. I was the first woman in my family to graduate from college. Without her that would not have been possible. She made me believe in and love myself. I love you mom 🙂

I am inspired by my mother and Iyanla Vanzant. Both women have faced different obstacles in life and have carried themselves with dignity and grace.
