Hey curvy girls all over the world,
Today, I wanted to share my opinions on why I ignore certain fashion and style rules. For those of you who have been following me for years, you know that I do believe in flattering. However, I also believe in wearing whatever you feel looks good on you. I know it sounds a bit contradicting but its just how I feel. We have tons of articles about breaking fashion rules like wearing horizontal stripes, white jeans, and more (Read HERE). Fashion rules can and should be broken because the old rules are all about making you look smaller. Sometimes when I’m getting dressed, looking smaller is not the objective. The overall objective, at least for me, is to create an amazing outfit that I think I look good and feel good in.
Case in point, I found the cutest pleated floral skirt that had a lot of volume in it. I was immediately drawn to the print and liked that the skirt hit at the knee. As a girl with wide hips and a big butt, some would say I should steer clear of anything that adds volume to the largest part of my body. However, the skirt is dope, so should I pass on it just because it adds volume. In my opinion, absolutely not.

Another rule that I ignore is the no turtlenecks for girls with big boobs. I ignore it because I don’t want a closet full of v-necks. Back in college, I had a turtleneck in every color. I used to be obsessed. While fitted turtlenecks probably amplify my breasts, some relaxed styles deflect from my ample bosom. I wanted to wear a fitted black turtleneck with this skirt because I wanted the skirt to shine on its own and I like the juxtaposition of something fitted with something voluminous.
One of things I do to create a balance with pieces that may not follow the flattering rules is add pieces or accessories that are flattering to my body type.
For example, with the skirt, I wore a pair of black sheer tights and black ankle boots to balance out the volume of the skirt . I have small ankles so ankle boots or ankle strap shoes are flattering to my legs.
Basically, my philosophy is to wear what YOU THINK looks good on you. THere are always going to be people who say something makes you look too big or just isn’t flattering. I feel like as long as the overall look is good, then I’m going to rock it.
Do you ignore fashion rules? What types of styles do you wear that THEY say you shouldn’t?
