Last night I DVR’d Scandal just so I could watch plus size designer Ashley Nell Tipton rip the runway at New York Fashion Week. After seeing her beautiful 1950’s inspired show featuring real plus models like Liris Crosse, I literally squealed. I even got excited when I saw Kelly Osbourne and Zac Posen smile with glee after watching her collection.
After each designer was critiqued on their final collection, tears came to my eyes when Heidi Klum congratulated Ashley and named her as the Project Runway winner. This win means so much to the plus size industry. As I said on Twitter last night, Ashley just opened up more doors for plus size designers and for plus size fashion. What she did was show the mainstream fashion world that clothes can be designed inclusive of all sizes. She wowed the judges with her crop top sets and sheer dresses. She showed plus size women in a modern and fashion forward way. Ashley has made history more than once on Project Runway. She was the first designer to put plus size models on the PR runway and now she is the first plus size designer to win Project Runway. Ashley’s collection represented a new age plus size woman. Today, plus size women aren’t ashamed or afraid to showcase their bodies and we are demanding fashion that is trendy, sexy, classy, And downright bad ass.
Congratulations Ashley on your win!
