Hey curvy girls all over the world,
I know I am a little late on the news but word on the street is that Mango will be doing a plus size line. I for one am excited because I like Mango’s clothes and have maneuvered my way into a Large once or twice. With so many fast fashion brands saying no to doing a plus size line, I am quite intrigued by Mango stepping up to do one. They will be following in the footsteps of H&M who re-launched their plus size line 2 years ago. My only hope is that they do better than what H&M did.
According to Business Insider, the Spanish retailer is offering plus sizes in hopes of “doubling their sales by 2019.” To me, that sounds like they’re trying to come for Zara’s number one spot. In case you guys don’t remember, I was on Good Morning America last November speaking about Zara’s distaste for plus size people (watch here). I believe in people following their visions. If you don’t have a vision to include plus size clothes, that’s fine. My issue comes when designers and retail brands say that plus size women and men aren’t deserving of stylish well made clothes. The fact of the matter is that we are deserving of it, whether you’re a size 18 or 28.
Mango’s plus size line is set to launch in 2014. While it sounds great and all, I am a bit skeptical because its all about execution. H&M had a second chance at relaunching a plus size line and it was a bust. If you live in NYC, stop by the 6th ave and 34th street store to see the slither of space that we have. The racks are full of ill fitting basic jeans, dresses, and tops.
My advice to Mango is RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH. Don’t just make larger patterns based off of your misses sizes, learn about the plus size body and design accordingly.
