Hey curvy girls all over the world,
The #1 question I get asked a lot is , Where do you shop? One reason I get those questions is because of my lunch break shopping adventures. If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter (@stylishcurves), almost everyday I share with my followers the pieces I’m loving from NYC stores. Anyone who knows me, knows that I don’t really care for shopping online. Although as a plus size woman its a must, but I try to buy in store as often as possible.
I am aware that living in NYC gives me more of an advantage of finding stylish pieces above a size 16. There are little mom and pop retails stores that offer plus sizes. They are of course under the radar, which sometimes I like because I don’t have to worry about seeing another person with my outfit. I know, petty, right?!
There is such a great need for plus size women to be able to shop brick and mortar stores. 80% of our wardrobes shouldn’t have to come from online. We should be able to have both option but unfortunately the in store option leaves us limited.
The stores I am listing are stores that I actually shop in. This is more of a personal preference list. There are quite a few more stores to shop for plus in NYC but I will do a separate list for all the stores in NYC that you can shop plus sizes at.
Lord & Taylor on 5th Avenue
424 Fifth Avenue
This department store is my best kept secret because alot of plus women don’t really shop there. The 5th Avenue flagship store offers almost all the designer plus size brands in store. You can shop, DKNYC Plus (other stores only offer it online), Michael Kors Plus, Calvin Klein Plus, Calvin Klein Plus, Vince Camuto Plus, Adrianna Papell, and they even carry Jessica Simpson Plus, Lucky Brand, Love Ady and more. This department store is much more organized, clean, and offers better customer service than other department stores. L&T almost always has a coupon going every week and they have a great return policy. They still need some work for their online plus size section.
59th & Lexington Ave.
Whenever Bloomingdales has a sale, I go to the 59th street store, especially for plus size denim. They carry all the high end plus denim brands like, James Jeans. There plus department is small but they offer a really nice selection of occasion dresses in plus and this is a better stop if you’re in need of workwear pieces.
K&G’s on Lexington & E. 42nd Street/Harlem
When I am on a budget and just want to snag something cute and affordable for work, K&G’s is my spot. I’ve spent many lunch breaks in there. It was during a lunch break that I found the above leopard print skirt for $20. Their clothes are heavily discounted. You can get Calvin Klein dresses under $50 and they carry a bevy of jr. plus brands. Everyday is not a banner shopping day, but when I score good pieces, my big fashion heart is content. Did I mention, they also carry size 11 shoes too. Recently they just closed the Lexington Ave. store but you can shop their Harlem location.
325 W. 38th Street (between 8/9th Avenues)
Suite 207, 212.842.1641
I haven’t been in her Manhattan showroom in a while but if you are looking to shop for plus size designer dresses then you should definitely stop by Monif C. on West 38th street in NYC. Everythignyou see online is in store. Plus she carries shoes in store too. It’s a nice cozy spot with great customer service.
Macy’s 34th Street Herald Square
Macy’s on 34th street can be a bit crazy but if you’re looking for trendy plus size styles, then this is the place to go. They have a nice selection of junior plus brands like, Baby Phat, American Rag, and they carry a lot of their online junior plus styles in store.
332 Malcolm X Blvd Bedford – Stuyvesant, NY 11233
This independently owned boutique is the place to shop for nights out with the girls. They offer a multitude of sexy body con plus size dresses and of the moment accessories.
Century 21 is my designer shoe and handbag spot. I personally like the one on 86th street in Brooklyn but the one on Cortland street has a better clothing selection. They used to have an entire plus size section years ago but they got rid of it. Now, you can find sprinkles of plus size pieces in store. If you like the thrill of the hunt, then you will like it here.
Fashion to Figure
Kingz Plaza Mall
5100 Kings Plaza, Brooklyn, NY 11234
If you’re looking for super trendy inexpensive pieces for a quick night out, then stop by Kingz Plaza mall and shop FTF. It’s a troop if you live in the outer boroughs but you will definitely leave with something because everything is under $60
Lee Lee’s Valise
368 Court St, Brooklyn, NY 11231
Lee Lee’s Valise has become a shopping staple in Brooklyn for plus size women. One of the first plus size boutiques in NYC. Lee Lee’s is pricey but they offer a great assortment of evening dresses and daytime pieces. What’s great about Lee Lee’s Valise is their accessories. You can find one of a kind belts and clutches designed by the owner herself, Lisa Dolan.
Times Square, 1540 Broadway, NY, NY
The F21 in Times Square is the only store in NYC that carries plus size and actually gives us a full size section in store. Sometimes you can get pieces in store that haven’t hit online yet. Their return policy still sucks but being able to go in store and try on is wonderful.
34th street & 6th Avenue
H&M on 34th street is the only NYC store that carries plus sizes. The section started out large but has been reduced tremendously. The selection is not that great but you will find a cute top or two to add to your wardrobe.
That’s it for now, but we will be doing more NYC shopping spotlights for plus size women.
