Hey Curvy Girls all over the world,
Want to make shopping easier in store and online? This can be done when you know your fabrics. Whether it’s jersey knit, chiffon or polyester, you should know what fabric works best for your body, it will help with sizing. This post will focus on some commonly used fabrics from plus size brands and designers.
The most commonly used fabrics are jersey knit, cotton, and polyester.
Cotton is a good strong fabric that easy to work with. Cotton has a tendency to wrinkle very easily. Cotton can be mixed with different fabrics and is the solid foundation for most apparel.
Jersey fabric is a soft, warm stretchy fabric that is made from cotton, silk, or synthetic fibers. This material has an excellent drape and creases well . Most Jersey Knit has the ability to stretch.
Polyester is the most widely used synthetic fiber in clothing today. It is lightweight, resilient and resistant to wrinkling. When mixed with elastic and spandex you will get stretch. This fabric is often used in a lot of blouses.
Chiffon
I call this fabric my hit or miss fabric. Chiffon is an extremely light and sheer fabric used in dresses, blouses, and scarves. It can be made of silk, nylon, rayon or polyester. This fabric has no stretch unless blending with another. Chiffon comes forms a blend of polyester.
Style Tip: Layer a chiffon blouse with a fine knit jumper for an office look that transforms to going-out outfit.
My two favorite fabrics has to be spandex and rayon. When ever I notice these two fabrics in the description while shopping online I always size down (major stretch).
Spandex has exceptional elasticity because it is so stretchy and maintains its original shape. It is commonly used to make swimwear and a wide variety of sportswear. You may also see this fabric blended in a lot of body con designs.
Rayon can be made to resemble these fabrics. Rayon is highly absorbent, soft, comfortable, and easy to dye.
Knowing your fabrics will save you so much hassle when shopping especially online. When you master this skill you will know what works for your body and won’t have to many questions.
Hope this was helpful and if you any questions about any other fabrics be sure to leave them below.
